Day 1: Arrival in Axum – Exploring the Ancient Kingdom
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Axum, the heart of Ethiopia’s ancient civilization.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel and start exploring the Axum Obelisks, towering monuments
from the Aksumite Empire. Visit the St. Mary of Zion Church, believed to house the Ark of the
Covenant, and continue to the Queen of Sheba’s Palace, where legends say she once ruled. In
the afternoon, visit the Tombs of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, then explore the Axum Museum
for deeper insights into this once-powerful empire. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and rest for
the night.

Day 2: Drive to Gheralta – Exploring the Rock-Hewn Churches
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Gheralta, a region famous for its breathtaking rock
formations and ancient rock-hewn churches. Upon arrival, check into your lodge and prepare for
an adventure to Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Ethiopia’s most awe-inspiring churches, perched
high on a cliffside. The hike to the church is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views
of the Gheralta mountains. In the afternoon, visit Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two other
stunning rock churches known for their frescoes and remote locations. Spend the evening
relaxing at your lodge, enjoying the sunset over the rugged landscape.

Day 3: More of Gheralta – Drive to Mekele – Flight to Addis Ababa
Start your morning with a visit to another hidden gem of Gheralta, such as Debre Tsion or
Yohannes Maequddi, known for their intricate carvings and spiritual ambiance. Afterward, begin
your journey toward Mekele, enjoying the scenic drive through the Tigray highlands. Upon
arrival in Mekele, have lunch before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis
Ababa, concluding your Axum and Gheralta adventure.
